| I do not have a history with the Rupert River, but many of you do. This summer my wife and I boated 20k up the westerly limits above Baie James Highway. It is indeed a special place, however, we found it at the center of attention for both HydroQuebec, the CREE members with whom we spoke and Environmentalists doing surveys. My site mate was artist/photographer Reno Salvail who was doing an internet photo mirror project to show the change that was to soon occur. It was his understanding that it would soon look like the Eastmain, drained and empty due to the efforts to re-direct waters for power useage. During his stay pilots informed him that recent agreements with the CREE Nation would create some 49-50 dams along the water course to assure water levels remain. The dam scenario understanding was echoed by the CREE workers doing nearby cutting and surveyors doing helicopter lift GPS elevation surveys along the river for a whole raft of other professionals soon adding to the impact study. Public hearings are apparently past. Other workers of the study effort indicated that only after the environmental study would another CREE decision be made to possibly allow the massive change to this waterway. The assurance that it was not a "done deal" did not include the political/financial rewards benefiting the decision makers. Some Indain comments were directed at the new homes among their tribe of those doing the negotiations. The word is that the main customer for the electricity is the USA. MANY OF YOU MAY HAVE A BETTER HANDLE ON THIS ISSUE AND CAN SHED LIGHT ON HOW YOUR OWN PAST MERITS ATTENTION TO THIS ISSUE. There were several canoe groups running from Lac Mistassini who had come believing they would soon lose it forever. I asked many persons of all sectors and no one wanted this loss to happen but that it was a political payoff that was beyond their impact. I was surprised that so many could not effect a stop. We may all lose this resource. Those with more understanding than I should speak to Keewaydineesi as to just what is happening. |
