You know, I went to Songadeewin years ago. Starting in 1963. Some very happy memories, I must say. But I also have a history: my mother and her two sisters went there, and knew the Harter family almost from the beginning. I cried when Songadeewin closed, even though I couldn't have afforded to send my own daughters there. It gave me great pleasure when I heard it had opened again.
I think often of a girl who was in my cabin when I was about 9 who was from Curacao. I remember how exotic we all thought she was, and when her father came to visit her in a seaplane, it was too unbelievable to be true. I wonder where she is now. I can't even remember her name, I'm afraid, but I can still hear the sound of her voice. When my mother died five years ago, her sisters sang a camp song from Songadeewin at her interment. I don't know how else to convey how important Songadeewin was to me and my family. |
